Aldosterone, Response to ACTH (Baseline, 30 Minute, 60 Minute)
Test Code90493
Preferred Specimen
Red Top

Minimum Volume
0.25 mL (x3)
Other Acceptable Specimens
Plasma collected in: EDTA (lavender-top), sodium heparin (green-top), or lithium heparin (green-top) tubes
Instructions
Draw baseline specimen. Draw another specimen 30 minutes and 60 minutes after stimulation.
Serum separator tubes (SST) are unacceptable. Draw blood in a red-top tube (no gel).
Separate serum after clotting. Ship serum refrigerated or frozen. Do not submit glass tubes. Draw "upright" samples at least 1/2 hour after patient sits up.
Note: Cortrosyn (cosyntropin) not supplied by the laboratory. This test cannot be collected at a Patient Service Center.

Clinical Significance
Approximately 1-2% of individuals with primary hypertension have primary hyperaldosteronism characterized by hypokalemia (low potassium) and low direct renin. Because serum aldosterone concentrations vary due to dietary sodium intake and body position, some physicians prefer measurement of 24-hour urine concentrations for aldosterone.
