Preferred Specimen
4 mL serum collected in a red-top tube (no gel) - protected from light and
3 mL frozen plasma collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube - protected from light and
2 mL frozen whole blood collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube - protected from light

Patient Preparation
Overnight fasting is required.
Avoid vitamin supplements for 24 hours prior to collection.

Minimum Volume
2 mL serum • 1 mL EDTA plasma • 1 mL EDTA whole blood

Instructions
Patients should be 18 years of age or greater.

Folate & Vitamin B12: Transfer 2 mL (1 mL min) serum into plastic transport tube, ship frozen.

Vitamin B2, B3, B5: Transfer 2 mL (1 mL min) serum into an amber vial (or wrap with aluminum foil), ship frozen.

Vitamin B6: Transfer 3 mL (1 mL min) EDTA plasma into an amber vial (or wrap with aluminum foil), ship frozen.

Vitamin B1: Transfer 3 mL (1 mL min) EDTA whole blood into an amber vial (or wrap with aluminum foil), ship frozen.

Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew analyte results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation. Remove serum or plasma from cells within 4 hours of collection.

Transport Container
Amber polypropylene or polyethylene tubes or
Neutral color polypropylene or
Polyethylene tubes wrapped in aluminum foil to protect from light

Transport Temperature
Frozen
