Preferred Specimen
3 mL serum collected in a no additive (royal blue-top) tube and
6 mL whole blood collected in each of two separate EDTA trace metal-free (royal blue-top) tubes
or
3 mL serum collected in a no additive (royal blue-top) tube and
6 mL packed red blood cells in each of two EDTA trace metal-free (royal blue-top) tubes
6 mL whole blood collected in each of two separate EDTA trace metal-free (royal blue-top) tubes
or
3 mL serum collected in a no additive (royal blue-top) tube and
6 mL packed red blood cells in each of two EDTA trace metal-free (royal blue-top) tubes
Patient Preparation
Overnight fasting is required.
Refrain from taking vitamins or mineral supplements 3 days before specimen collection and from eating legumes and leafy vegetables 2 days before specimen collection.
Minimum Volume
1.5 mL serum • 3 mL whole blood • 3 mL packed red blood cells
Instructions
Patients should be 18 years of age or greater.
Serum: Centrifuge and separate serum into 2 aliquots.
1 mL serum (0.5 mL minimum) for Calcium and Iron, ship refrigerated
2 mL serum (1 mL minimum) for Zinc and Copper, ship refrigerated
Whole blood: Collect two 3 mL EDTA trace metal-free (royal blue-top) tubes.
Use first 3 mL tube to prepare Packed RBC's for Magnesium, ship refrigerated.
Submit the second 3 mL whole blood tube for Manganese, Selenium, Molybdenum, Chromium, ship refrigerated.
