Semen Analysis Fertility
MessageSeminal Fluid Collection (patient instruction sheet available): Do not reject sample if outside stated optimal collection/delivery times for the laboratory. The patient should be instructed to collect a specimen 2-7 days after the last ejaculation. The entire specimen should be collected by masturbation into a sterile, clean, wide mouth glass or hard plastic container. Condoms are unacceptable. The specimen should be kept warm and delivered to the Laboratory within one hour. (NOTE: Any deviation from the collection and/or transport instructions must be documented in the patient record.) Motility should be immediately determined after liquefaction (5 to 25 minutes) after collection. All other testing must be completed within 4 hours.

Clinical Significance
Semen analysis is considered the most important tool in the evaluation of male infertility. A good semen analysis provides valuable data about number, motility, and morphology. Male infertility can be affected by a number of causes. Chief among these is a decrease in the number of viable sperm. Other causes include sperm with abnormal morphology and abnormalities of the seminal fluid
