Clinical Significance
Fibrinogen has a dual role in blood clotting (hemostasis) and inflammation, acting as the precursor to fibrin for clot formation and as an "acute phase reactant" that rises with inflammation, infection, or injury. High levels signal increased risk for cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) and can indicate underlying inflammation, while critically low levels (like in trauma or liver disease) cause severe bleeding. Monitoring fibrinogen helps assess bleeding/clotting risk, inflammation, and liver function, with early replacement vital in acute bleeding.
