Clinical Significance
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), an enzyme involved in amino acid metabolism, is found in many tissues, such as the liver, cardiac and skeletal muscle, kidneys, and pancreas. Therefore, ALT elevations are found associated with both hepatic and non-hepatic disorders e.g. hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver tumors, biliary obstruction, Reye’s syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, myositis, myocarditis, and myocardial infarction. Due to its primarily liver distribution, ALT elevations are highly suggestive of liver damage and ALT measurements are particularly useful in the diagnosis and management of liver disease.
