NOTE: Fecal specimens on any one patient should not be sent to the laboratory more than once in a 24 hour period, unless requested by the physician. If more than 1 specimen is collected in a 24 hour period, the specimens will be combined and treated as 1 specimen in a SAF vial.

Preferred Specimen
Stool


Minimum Volume
Optimal volume up to SAF vial fill line or >5 mL/1 mL minimum of unpreserved specimen


Transport Container
Optimal: Stool placed in a SAF vial with formalin (yellow cap)
Fresh stool should be placed in the SAF vial within 30 minutes of collection if received in a white cap container.


Transport Temperature
Room Temperature: 30 minutes (Fresh Stool)
Room Temperature: 7 days (SAF)
