Preferred Specimen
Aspirate/ Tissue/Body fluids (other than CSF)/Wounds Swab


Minimum Volume
Optimal volume >5 mL/1 mL minimum of aspirates and fluids/ Optimal volume >1 g/ 0.5 g minimun (the size of a pea) of tissue/One swab per order


Instructions
A MAN (anaerobic culture) is recommended when an Aspirate/ Tissue/Body fluids (other than CSF) is collected for a MGEN (aerobic culture).


Transport Container
Sterile Screw cap container
Syringe without needle (replace with plastic needle cap)
E-swab (limited use on deep wounds)


Transport Temperature
Room Temperateure: 24 hours
Refrigerated: Up to 48 hours
Frozen: Unacceptable


Specimen Stability
Room Temperature: < 2 hours
Refrigerated: E swab up to 48 hours; all other specimen types need to be refrigerated and set up within 24 hour of collection for optimal pathogenic bacterial recovery.
Frozen: Unacceptable
