Patient Preparation
Patient should refrain from taking vitamins or mineral supplements at least three days prior to specimen collection

Plasma collected in: EDTA (royal blue-top) tube or sodium heparin (royal blue-top) tube


Instructions
Carefully clean skin prior to venipuncture. Avoid worksite collection. Avoid hemolysis. Use the royal blue-top "Trace Metal" evacuated tube, which is available with EDTA, heparin or no additives. Do not use gel barrier tubes. Centrifuge serum or plasma specimens within 1 hour of collection. Immediately separate serum and plasma specimens from the cells into trace element collection vial(s).

Clinical Significance
Selenium is an element of parenteral nutrition. Monitoring the Selenium concentration is useful in assessing parenteral nutrition, especially recent intake. Concentrations are also monitored in children with propionic acidemia who require special diets with supplements.
