An ACTH Stimulation Test aids in the diagnosis of primary or secondary adrenal insufficiency. Other names for the test could include Cortisol Stimulation.

For Outpatients, an ACTH Stimulation test is a scheduled test done in the Outpatient Clinic.
For Inpatients, order through the patient's electronic medical record.

Note: This should not be confused with Dexamethasone Suppression Test which is used to rule out Cushing's. Therefore, if the outpatient has already been administered Dexamethasone in the previous 24 hours by another entity the patient will be directed to the lab for a Cortisol level (phlebo will draw an extra Plain Red top). Patient may then be discharged.
