Preferred Specimen
2 mL (x2) frozen plasma collected in a 3.2% sodium citrate (light blue-top) tube
Minimum Volume
1mL (x 2)
Instructions
Submit a total of 4mL (1-2mL in each of 2 tubes).
Centrifuge light blue-top tube 15 minutes at approx. 1500 g within 60 minutes of collection. Using a plastic pipette, remove plasma, taking care to avoid the WBC/platelet buffy layer and place into a plastic vial. Centrifuge a second time and transfer platelet-poor plasma into a new plastic vial. Plasma must be free of platelets (<10,000/mcl). Freeze immediately and ship on dry ice.

Clinical Significance
Factor IX Activity is useful to evaluate a prolonged aPTT. The second most common form of hemophilia is caused by deficiency of factor IX. Hemophilia B is an x-linked disorder affecting between 1 in 25,000 to 30,000 males.
Factor IX Human Inhibitor provides a quantitative determination of inhibitors. This aids in developing treatment strategies for patients with hemophilia.
