Clinical Significance
A thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) blood test is used for a differential diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism from normal; differential diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism from secondary and tertiary hypothyroidism; thyroid function test (TSH is high in primary hypothyroidism, low in hyperthyroidism); evaluate hypothyroid patients receiving replacement doses of various thyroid hormone preparations; detect hypopituitarism; follow up on low T4 newborn screen results.
