RESULT: INTERPRETATION:
NONREACTIVE PATIENT IS CONSIDERED NOT IMMUNE TO INFECTION WITH HBV
INDETERMINATE UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF ANTI-HBs IS PRESENT AT LEVELS CONSISTENT WITH IMMUNITY
REACTIVE PATIENT IS CONSIDERED TO BE IMMUNE TO INFECTION WITH HBV
NONREACTIVE PATIENT IS CONSIDERED NOT IMMUNE TO INFECTION WITH HBV
INDETERMINATE UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF ANTI-HBs IS PRESENT AT LEVELS CONSISTENT WITH IMMUNITY
REACTIVE PATIENT IS CONSIDERED TO BE IMMUNE TO INFECTION WITH HBV
Clinical Significance
The presence of antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) is used to determine immune status to HBV or disease progression in individuals infected with HBV. An increase in anti-HBs levels, together with a loss of detectable circulating hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), denotes convalescence in hepatitis B infections. Futhermore, anti-HBs levels can be measured to determine if vaccination is needed or, following a vaccination regimen, to determine if protective immunity has been achieved.
