Clinical Significance
Reliable culture results are only possible if a good sample is obtained. Samples should be taken aseptically. If pus is present it should be sampled, as it is the best indicator of pathogens.Specimens should be sent as soon as possible, as some organisms will not survive and others will be overgrown by more vigorous strains. This code should be ordered for superficial wounds. If an anaerobic infection is suspected, the code CANA should be ordered. Test code GS should be ordered for a Gram Stain. If the specimen is from a bite, please specify if human or animal bite and, if animal, the type of animal.
