Clinical Significance
A Fungal infection diagnosis is completely dependent on the selection and collection of appropriate clinical specimens for culture. Proper collection and rapid transport to the laboratory are important in the recovery of fungi.
This code should be ordered for specimens that can have a smear made and FS (Fungal smear) should also be ordered. Acceptable specimens include: swab specimens from vagina, nose, throat, or ears, sputum, tissue specimens, CSF, other body fluids and urine.
A fungal culture will not be finalized as no growth until after 4 weeks.
