7 mL aliquot of a well-mixed 24-hour urine collected in an acid-washed or metal-free container

Instructions
Collect without preservative and transport in an acid-washed or metal-free plastic container. Record total volume on specimen container and on test requisition. To avoid contamination, do not measure 24-hour volume.

Clinical Significance
Copper is an essential element that is a cofactor of many enzymes. Copper metabolism is disturbed in Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, primary biliary cirrhosis, and Indian childhood cirrhosis. Urinary copper concentrations are also useful to monitor patients on chealation therapy.
