Patient Preparation
No special preparation is necessary.
Instructions
Collection:
Direct Venipuncture
1. Using 21-gauge or larger needle, draw the discard tube with 5mL. Dispose of discard tube.
2. Collect 2 Greiner Bio-One partial fill vacuette tubes with 3.2% sodium citrate (blue top) of whole blood. Fill the sample tubes to the black line (1/2 tube). Do NOT under or over fill.
3. Gently invert the sample tube at least 5 times to ensure complete mixing. Do NOT shake. Samples with evidence of clotting cannot be used.
4. Label both tubes per policy.
Indwelling Catheter:
1. Discard the first 5mL from the indwelling catheter to clear the line. Ensure the catheter is free of clots.
2. Immediately transfer blood to a Greiner Bio-One partial-fill vacuette tube with 3.2% sodium citrate (blue top). Fill the sample tube to the black line (1/2) tube. Do NOT under or over fill.
3. Repeat step 2 to obtain 2 specimens.
4. Gently invert the sample tube at least 5 times to ensure complete mixing. Do NOT shake. Samples with evidence of clotting cannot be used.
5. Label both tubes per policy.
*Do NOT refrigerate specimens. Do NOT send to lab through the pneumatic tube system.*

Clinical Significance
The PRU Test reports patient rsults in P2Y12 Reaction Units. P2Y12 Reaction Units (PRU) report the amouont of P2Y12 receptor mediated aggregation specific to the platelet and are calculated as a function of the rate and extent of platelet aggregation in the ADP channel. Values <180 PRU suggest a drug effect from a P2Y12 inhibitor, in patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).
