Clinical Significance

Vancomycin resistance in enterococci (VRE) limits antimicrobial therapy. The VRE culture screen permits rapid detection of those patients who are infected or colonized with VRE. An increased risk of VRE infection has been associated with previous vancomycin therapy, severe underlying disease or immunosuppression, and inta-abdominal surgery.
