Clinical Significance
The upper respiratory tract serves as a primary focal site of infection and a principal reservoir of transmission. Streptococcus pyogenes is the most common cause of bacterial pharyngitis. Nonsuppurative complications include poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis and acute rheumatic fever.
