Protect specimen from prolonged exposure to light by transporting in a brown paper sack, aluminum foil, or a dark tube.
This test is for Neonatal Bilirubin (Total Bilirubin) measurement on Plasma or Serum on neonatal patients less than 30 days old. For Total Bilirubin measurement on patients 30 days old and older, order TBIL. For Total Bilirubin measurement on Body Fluids, order MISTBIL.

Clinical Significance
Neonatal bilirubin is increased in erythroblastosis fetalis (hemolytic disease of the newborn), which causes jaundice in the first two days of life. Other causes of neonatal jaundice include physiologic jaundice, hematoma/hemorrhage, hypothyroidism, and obstructive jaundice.
