Preferred Specimen

Body fluid specimen, including but not limited to: Pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, or synovial fluid. Note fluid type in order comments or on patient specimen label.

Instructions

Collect body fluid in a body fluid collection bag or other sterile container and transport to lab. Refrigerate if transport will be delayed. Note fluid type in order comments or on patient specimen label.

This test is for glucose measurement on body fluids other than CSF. For glucose measurement on CSF, order CSFGLU (or CSFP for CSF Profile).  For glucose measurement on serum or plasma, order GLU. For glucose measurement on urine, order URGLU.

Gross viscosity or turbidity may interfere with testing.


Clinical Significance

Decreased values in the concentration of glucose in an exudate can occur in bacterial infections, malignancies, rheumatoid arthritis, and tuberculosis. The glucose levels in an exudate will be considerably lower in comparison with the serum glucose in these conditions.
