Body fluid specimen, including but not limited to: Cerebrospinal Fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, or synovial fluid. Note fluid type in order comments or on patient specimen label.

Instructions

Collect body fluid in a body fluid collection bag or other sterile container and transport to lab. Refrigerate if transport will be delayed. Note fluid type in order comments or on patient specimen label.

This test is for amylase testing on body fluids.  For amylase testing on serum or plasma, order AMY.  For amylase testing on urine, order URAM.

Clinical Significance

Body fluid amylase levels are of value in detecting the development of complications, such as pseudocyst, ascites, and pleural effusion following acute pancreatitis.

Concentrations of amylase can accumulate in an exudate in response to esophageal rupture, pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer.

This test is for amylase testing on body fluids.  For amylase testing on serum or plasma, order AMY.
