Limitations
Equivocal or positive results should be supplemented by testing with a standardized Western Blot procedure.


Reference Range
Negative - normal; However, a negative result does not exclude the possibility of infection with B.burgdorferi.


Clinical Significance
Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. The spirochete is transmitted to humans through the bite of Ixodes species ticks. In conjunction with positive qualitative results, positive supplemental testing is supportive evidence of exposure to B. burgdorferi and can be used to support a clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease.
