Clinical Significance
Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant women who have never been diagnosed with diabetes until pregnancy. Although the mother may not continue to have diabetes after delivery, it is important to screen pregnant women for gestational diabetes due to the risks posed to the baby in utero as well as after birth. Gestational diabetes can cause high blood glucose levels in the womb, increased fetal weight gain, damage to the baby's sholders during birth, and increased risk for the baby to develop breathing problems, obesity and diabetes later in life.
