This test is for random or fasting measurement of Glucose on Plasma or Serum.

For Post-Prandial measurement of Glucose on Plasma or Serum, order GLUPC.

For Gestational Glucose Tolerance on Plasma or Serum, order GTTGES.

For Glucose Tolerance Test on Plasma or Serum, order GTT.

For measurement of Glucose on Body Fluids other than CSF, order MISGLU.

Clinical Significance

Glucose is a primary cellular energy source. Fasting plasma glucose concentrations and tolerance to a dose of glucose are used to establish the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and disorders of carbohydrate metabolism. Glucose measurements are used to monitor therapy in diabetics and in patients with dehydration, coma, hypoglycemia, insulinoma, acidosis, and ketoacidosis. This order is for a random or fasting glucose level. For a 2-Hour Post-Prandial glucose, order GLUPC. For a Glucose Tolerance Test, order GTT. For a Gestational Glucose Tolerance Test, order GTTGES.
