Sterile body fluid including CSF



Minimum Volume
CSF-2 ml, Other Sterile body fluid-10 ml


Instructions

Collect specimen aseptically; transport in a sterile container. **Sterile body fluids may be directly inoculated into Bactec Plus Blood Culture Bottles, 8-10 mls per bottles. If fluid is received in Bactec Bottles a gram stain will not be performed unless additional fluid is recieved for processing of gram stain.

Transport Temperature
CSF-RT,immediately. Other Sterile Body Fluid-Store at RT for 2 hr, then 2-8 C.


Specimen Stability
2-8 C for up to 24 hrs.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Improperly labelled; Improper storage/transport


Methodology
Microscopic examination; gram stain

Setup Schedule
Daily upon receipt

Clinical Significance

The gram stain is a critical test for the rapid, presumptive diagnosis of infectious agents and also serves to assess the quality of clinical specimens.
