Clinical Significance

The detection and semi-quantitative of antinuclear antibodies(ANA) aid in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases.  A positive ANA result usually occurs in a number of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) , mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Sjögren’s syndrome (SS), and progressive systemic sclerosis  (PSS).  However, the incidence of low titer ANA positives increases with age in normal individuals.
