Lanoxin
CPT Codes
80162
Preferred Specimen
Serum (gold or red top tube)
Minimum Volume
0.5 mL
Instructions
Specimens should be drawn at least 6 hours after oral dose and 4 hours after intravenous dose. Digoxin Immune FAB (Digibind) therapy interferes with Digoxin measurement.
Transport Container
Serum (gold or red top) Tube
Transport Temperature
Room Temperature or Refrigeration
Specimen Stability
Room Temperature - 8 hours; Refrigerated - 1 weekd
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Hemolysis, Quantity Not Sufficient, EDTA (purple top) contamination, IV contamination
Methodology
Colorimetric
Setup Schedule
Daily upon receipt
Report Available
Upon completion of analysis
Limitations
The Digoxin Immune FAB (Digibind), which is used in the treatment of digoxin intoxication, has been found to interfere with immunoassay measurements. Digoxin measurements in patients that have been administered Digibind should be interpreted with caution.
Reference Range
Therapeutic Range: 0.8 - 1.9 ng/mL
Clinical Significance
Digoxin is a widely prescribed cardiac glycoside indicated in the treatment of congestive heart failure and supraventricular arrhythmias. Digoxin measurements are used to monitor patient compliance and therapy, and to diagnose potential overdose.
