Clinical Significance
Cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions the brain and spinal cord, is formed by both ultrafiltration and active secretion from plasma. Cerebrospinal fluid chloride levels generally reflect systemic (blood) chloride levels and are of limited clinical utility in the diagnosis of meningitis and other conditions or diseases related to CSF.
