Fresh or spray-fixed specimens may be submitted for cytologic examination.
Instructions
CYTOLOGY ORDER - TAKE SPECIMEN TO CYTOLOGY
Transport Container
Fresh specimens may be submitted in a labeled leakproof container. Spray-fixed smears should be submitted in plastic slide holders which are provided or sent in 95% alcohol in a leakproof specimen cup.
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unlabeled specimens wil be rejected
Methodology
ThinPrep technology or manual procedure depending on the specimen type
Setup Schedule
Specimen preparation is Monday - Friday 6:00am - 6:00pm
Report Available
Available upon completion of analysis, normally 1 - 2 days
Reference Range
Morphologic reporting format is used along with the Bethesda reporting format depending upon specimen type.
Clinical Significance
Cytology specimens are examined for benign, atypical and malignant cellular changes. Organisms will also be reported if identified during the process.
