Clinical Significance

Aids in the diagnosis of primary acute phase CMV infection, esp. patients with infectious mono and pregnant women who may have primary MCV infection. A positive CMV IgM indicates a recent infection(primary, reeactivation, or reinfection). IgM antibody responses have been demonstrated in some mononucleosis patients, few pregnant women, and renal and cardiac transplant patients.
