Clinical Significance
Normal hemostasis is a delicate balance between the vessels, the platelets, the procoagulant proteins and the fibrinolytic proteins. Disturbance of this balance or interruption of the reactions involved can result in hemostatic abnormalities. These abnormalities are often expressed as bleeding or thrombotic problems. There are a wide variety of laboratory tests, which can be used in the evaluation of hemostasis. A select battery of screening tests may be used to evaluate a patient's hemostatic system.
