This test is for Amylase measurement on Plasma or Serum.  For Amylase measurement on Body Fluids, order MISAMY.  For Amylase measurement on Urine, order URAM.

Transport Temperature
Room Temperature or Refrigeration; Do not freeze plasma.


Specimen Stability
Room Temperature - 7 days; Refrigerated - 1 month; Freezing not recommended.

Quantity Not Sufficient, EDTA (purple top tube) contamination, IV contamination

Clinical Significance

Amylase is an amylolytic digestive enzyme produced by the exocrine pancreas and salivary glands.  Amylase is increased in acute pancreatitis, pancreatic abscess or pseudocyst, pancreatic trauma, amyloidosis, pancreatic neoplasm, commonbile- duct obstruction, and after thoracic surgery.  Increased amylase activity may be found in mumps parotitis and renal insufficiency.
