Instructions

Do not uncap tube or transfer sample.  Blood in lab cannot be used for ketone testing if specimen has been uncapped due to risk of evaporation of ketones from specimen.  Measures only acetone and acetoacetic acid.  Order BHYD for measurement of Beta-Hydroxybuterate.

Clinical Significance

Greatly elevated levels of ketone bodies will depress the concentration of bicarbonate in the blood.  The ketone bodies, usually seen in diabetes, also tend to interfere with excretion of uric acid and produce mild central nervous system depression.
