Clinical Significance
Resistance of anaerobic organisms to antibiotics has been increasing in recent years. Significant increases in resistance are now seen with non-Bacteroides fragilis group gram-negatives and other genera such as Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Prevotella, and Peptostreptococcus. Since negative therapeutic outcomes are directly associated with antimicrobial resistance, accurate, timely susceptibility testing of anaerobes has become more important.
