Clinical Significance
The RET red/green FISH probe mixture allows for definitive identification of the rearrangement in FFPE tumor specimens. RET rearrangements have been identified in 1-2% of lung adenocarcinomas (non-small cell lung cancer), especially in a younger population (<30) which are negative for EGFR, KRAS, ROS1, and ALK abnormalities. Lung cancer studies have shown these patients responding to treatments with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) such as cabozantinib. Also, RET rearrangements have been found in radiation induced papillary and medullary thyroid carcinomas.
