Specimens grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false-negative results.

5 mm paraffin block; 0.5 mL synovial, vitreous, or spinal fluid submitted in a sterile plastic leakproof vial

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Sources: Preferred: Small intestine tissue (duodenum, ileum, or jejunum) Acceptable: Tissue or biopsy specimen of brain, gastrointestinal tissue, heart valve, lymph node, small intestine, synovial tissue, or other visceral tissue fixed in a paraffin block
Container/Tube: Sterile container
Specimen Volume:Entire collection
Collection Instructions: Collect fresh tissue specimen.
Specimen Type: Spinal, synovial, or vitreous humor fluid
Container/Tube: Sterile vial

Sterile Container, leak-proof
The high sensitivity of amplification by PCR requires the specimen to be processed in an environment in which contamination of the specimen by Tropheryma whipplei DNA is not likely.
