2 mL whole blood collected in an EDTA trace element collection system (royal blue-top) tube, or sodium heparin, trace-element free with green band (royal blue-top) tube

Whole blood collected in: EDTA (lavender-top), or sodium heparin (green-top) tube


Instructions
Carefully clean skin prior to venipuncture. Avoid worksite collection. Avoid hemolysis. Use the royal blue-topped "Trace-Metal" evacuated tube, which is available with EDTA, heparin or with no additives.

Clinical Significance
Selenium is a key component of a number of functional selenoproteins required for normal health. The best known of these are the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase enzymes. Selenium plays an important role in the control of thyroid hormone metabolism and is important for proper reproductive performance.
