Clinical Significance
The presence of Fetal Hemoglobin in amniotic fluid suggests there was a leak of fetal fluids into the amniotic sac. This is associated with fetal malformations such as open neural tube and ventral wall defects and iatrogenic bleeds during amniocentesis. Also, the severity of Rh isoimmunization can be assessed with second trimester analysis of Fetal Hemoglobin.
