Clinical Significance
The presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in tumors or reactive tissues can be detected by expression of the EBV-associated small RNAs (EBERs) using in situ hybridization. EBER expression is seen in all EBV-associated malignancies including classical Hodgkin lymphoma (most commonly mixed cellularity type), nasopharyngeal carcinoma, post-transplant B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders, a subset of diffuse large B-cell lymphomas, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, and some childhood T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders.
