Preferred Specimen
Urethral, cervical, anorectal, throat or conjunctiva culture swab submitted in Amies gel transport medium (blue-top), or eSwab


Other Acceptable Specimens
Urethral, cervical, throat, anorectal, or conjunctiva submitted on Neigon plate (see instructions)


Instructions
Do not refrigerate. Indicate source of specimen on both the requisition or electronic order  and specimen collection device. For blood specimens, use test "Culture, Blood". For sterile body fluids, use test "Culture, Aerobic and Anaerobic".

Preferred: Urethral, cervical, anorectal, throat or conjunctiva. Collect specimen using a culture swab in Amies gel (blue-cap) or eSwab (white-cap) transport medium delivered within 24 hours of collection.

Acceptable: Inoculated medium (Martin-Lewis plate or Neigon plate). Transport container: Copan Transport swab containing Amies gel medium or eSwab.

Frozen: Unacceptable

Bacterial Culture, Aerobic, includes routine isolation and identification procedures • Susceptibility testing not routinely performed

Reference Range
No Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated
