Preferred Specimen
4 mL serum collected in a serum separator tube (SST)
Patient Preparation
Samples should be taken in the morning from patients in a fasting state, since iron values decrease by 30% during the course of the day and there can be significant interference from lipemia.
Minimum Volume
2 mL
Instructions
Ensure that complete clot formation has taken place before centrifugation. Specimens that are grossly hemolyzed are unacceptable. Keep tubes stoppered and upright at all times. Centrifuge within 8 hours of collection, transfer serum to sterile, plastic, screw-capped vial(s).
Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew analyte results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8.
