Patient Preparation
A fasting specimen is required.

For tolerance testing, overnight fasting is required.

Minimum Volume
0.5 mL


Instructions
Draw fasting specimen. Collect 1 mL serum for each timed specimen post glucose dose. All tubes must be clearly
marked with time drawn. Submit all tubes with one test requisition.

Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: 28 days


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Note: Reference ranges exist for 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 240, and 300 minutes post glucose.


Clinical Significance
Total insulin levels are useful in assessing the available insulin in serum, including antibody-bound insulin. Serum insulin levels are useful in the differential diagnosis of fasting hypoglycemia.
