Porphyria Screen

Test Code
902474

CPT Codes
82135, 84110<br /> Restricted Client Code

Includes
6301 - Delta-Aminolevulinic Acid, Random Urine
6329 - Porphobilinogen, Quantitative, Random Urine (performed at SJC)

Preferred Specimen
Test code 6301
2 mL of an unpreserved random urine or clean catch urine, submitted in a sterile, plastic, leak-proof container - Protected from light

Test code 6329
2 mL unpreserved urine collected in a plastic leak-proof container - Protected from light

Minimum Volume
Test code 6301: 0.6 mL
Test code 6329: 1 mL

Instructions
Two separate tubes are required for this profile.

**Please see the individual tests for specific specimen requirements, and stabilities.

For Test Code 6301:
Wrap container in aluminum foil to PROTECT FROM LIGHT. Do not use preservatives. Do not use first morning void, late evening specimen (after 8:00 PM), or specimen after excessive fluid intake. Keep refrigerated and transport refrigerated (cold packs).

For Test Code 6329:
***Urine should be refrigerated and protected from light.***

Whenever possible, the specimen should be collected during an acute episode because porphobilinogen (PBG) may decrease rapidly upon remission. PBG may also degrade when samples are exposed to UV light for extended periods, or are transported at ambient temperature. If an amber collection jug/urine cup is not available, the sample must be protected from light by completely wrapping the container in aluminum foil. PBG is most stable at pH 6-7, but samples may be sent with or without preservative. All results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings, relevant history, and other laboratory data.

Transport Temperature
Refrigerated (cold packs)

Specimen Stability
Room temperature: Unacceptable
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: 30 days

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
