Clinical Significance
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. Its medical uses include restoring mental alertness, as an enhancement to the medical effectiveness of certain medications, and as a part of treatment for breathing problems in premature infants. An overdose of caffeine can result in a state termed caffeine intoxication or caffeine poisoning. The analysis of urine specimens for the presence of caffeine, and/or its relative quantitative value, can assist clinicians in assessing potential caffeine poisonings or compliance with dependence treatment regimens, especially when serum collection may be precluded or difficult.
