Preferred Specimen
1 full whole blood EDTA (lavender-top) tube


Minimum Volume
Microtainer 0.5 mL • 1 mL whole blood EDTA tube


Other Acceptable Specimens
Whole blood from a full EDTA (tan-top) tube


Instructions
Maintain specimen at room temperature. If multiple draw, collect EDTA (lavender-top) tube last.

Note: If drawn with lead testing, EDTA (tan-top) is required.

Specimen Stability
Room temperature: 48 hours
Refrigerated: 48 hours
Frozen: Not acceptable


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Gross hemolysis • Clotted • Specimens that are past stability and those which appear to have had plasma removed

Limitations
Large platelets, parasites, howell jolly bodies, or cold agglutins may cause inaccurate results.
