FISH, Chromosome-Specific Probe (x1)
Test Code14654
CPT Codes
88271, 88273
Preferred Specimen
3 mL bone marrow or 5 mL whole blood collected in a sodium heparin (green-top) tube
Minimum Volume
1 mL bone marrow • 3 mL whole blood
Other Acceptable Specimens
Bone marrow or whole blood collected in: sodium heparin (royal blue-top) tube, or sodium heparin lead-free (tan-top) tube
Instructions
Clinical history/reason for referral is required with test order. Specify chromosome, clinical syndrome, or probe with test order. Multiple analytes provided. Please contact performing laboratory.
May be performed as a follow up test to G-banding chromosome analysis to investigate chromosome morphology. Alternatively, submit appropriate specimen as required for conventional cytogenetic analysis (amniotic fluid, whole blood, bone marrow, or tissue). Please call laboratory before sample submission.
For constitutional studies: submit 5-10 whole blood in a sodium heparin (green-top) tube. For hematological malignancy studies: send 1 to 3 mL bone marrow or 3 to 5 mL whole blood in a sodium heparin (green-top) tube.
Specimen viability decreases during transit. Send specimen to testing lab for viability determination. Do not freeze. Do not reject.
If one or more FISH tests are ordered on a specimen without chromosome analysis, a tissue culture fee will be added at an additional charge. If results are not possible, the test order may be canceled and replaced with a Cytogenetics Communication.
