Gastrin, 2 Specimens
Test Code6726
CPT Codes
82938, 82941
Preferred Specimen
1 mL serum (x2)
Patient Preparation
Overnight fasting (12 hours)
The serum secretin test requires patients to be off antacids and anticholinergic medications for 12 hours prior to the test. Proton pump inhibitors should not be discontinued because of concern of complications (acute bleeding and/or perforation if acid suppression is discontinued).
Minimum Volume
0.5 mL (x2)
Instructions
Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew analyte results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation.
Secretin Stimulation: The secretin used is a preparation from RepliGen (GIH Stimulation). For this protocol, 0.4 mcg of secretin per kilogram of body weight is infused by intravenous bolus. Serum for gastrin is obtained at -10 minutes and -1 minute before secretin injection, and +2 minute, +5, +10, +15, +20, and +30 minutes after secretin stimulation. Label each tube with time of collection.
