Preferred Specimen
Varies by specimen source:
Anal paps - Collect adequate sample using a moistened Dacron swab or cytobrush and thoroughly rinse in PreservCyt® vial.
FNA* samples (breast, head and neck, common bile duct, kidney, lymph nodes, lung, and other body sites)-collect samples from suspected areas; prepare air dried and fixed smears and rinse the needle in PreservCyt®.
Washings, brushings, BAL, effusions, urines or other fluids - mix with equal amount of CytoLyt®.
CSF - If hematopoietic disease is suspected, submit fresh samples.
Direct smears, Tzanck smears, sputum
Instructions
1. Specimens should be labeled with 2 patient identifiers, (name, DOB, MRN, other unique ID)
2. Slides/smears should be air-dried, and/or fixed with spray fixative or submerged in alcohol to preserve cells
3. Fluid should be preserved with an equal amount of CytoLyt®.
4. If hematopoietic disease is suspected submit fresh samples
5. Transport samples at room temperature unless it is fresh sample.
6. Fresh samples should be refrigerated to preserve cells.
