Culture for AFB, TB, Mycobacterium, atypical Mycobacterium, MAC, or MAI (includes AFB smear) refer to C AFB
Culture for Fungus (mould or yeast) refer to C F
Legionella culture refer to C LEG
For Pneumocystis jiroveci (carinii) refer to Pneumocystis jirovecii by PCR (Lower Resp) BUMCT

Sputum, expectorated

Deep Pharyngeal or Nasopharyngeal Sputum
Sputum on a transport swab or stick
Tracheal Aspirate
Bronchial Washing
Bronchial Alveolar Lavage (BAL)


Transport Container
Collect specimen in sterile, screw-capped container


Specimen Stability
NURSING UNITS:
Send to the Lab within 2 hours of collection.
DO NOT refrigerate specimens.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unacceptable specimens:
24-hour pooled sputum samples
More than one sample from the same source within a 24-hour period-NOTE: exception for SPUTUM for AFB only


Clinical Significance
This culture is intende for the isolation of bacteria commonly associated with pulmonary diseases in cystic fiborosis patients. Bacteria commonly seen with CF-associated infections include Pseudomonas aeruginosa (mucoid and nonmucoid), Staphylococcus aureus, Burkholderia cepacia complex, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, other non-fermenting gram-negative rods, Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
